SOURCE 1 - NEWSPAPER ARTICLE (PRIMARY SOURCE)
The source is a newspaper article dated as the 9th of May 1950; this means the newspaper would have been published three days after the initial discovery of Tollund Man. The article talks of how several different parts of Tollund man were taken apart and examined in different labs. Professor Glob was the expert and one of the first to examine the body in situ, he made the immediate decision for the well preserved corpse to be taken to the National Museum’s Conservation Institute before the natural elements destroyed the body they thought to be about 2000 years old. Since this source is a newspaper article its reliability can be called into question since the primary objective of any publication is to make a profit. The name of the newspaper and author are also not included, however, there are several experts who have been interviewed for the issue and so the information can be seen as accurate to anextent. In all, this source can be considered useful for someone studying Tollund man because it allows us to see how much the people understood about such occurrences as bog bodies and how they were able to ethically and scientifically handle the situation. |
SOURCE 2 - PHOTOGRAPH (PRIMARY SOURCE) The photograph shows the two brothers who discovered Tollund man and police officials putting the Tollund man into a box before the transportation of his body. The source is reliable because it is a primary source that was captured on the 8th of May 1950 immediately prior to the transportation of Tollund man. The box containing his body was then sent to the National Museum in Copenhagen via train for the official excavation and other scientific examinations. Moreover, the source was originally posted by the official website of the Silkeborg Museum, where the Tollund man’s body lay as of today. The website’s polishers of http://www.museumsilkeborg.dk/ will ensure the legitimacy of the content as they are recognised as a government facility. Consequently, historians are able to use this image as a reliable source to to determine more about the tale of the Tollund man. |
